Diet and Nutrition Counselling

There is ample evidence for correlation of diet and nutrition to cancer prevention and management. A joint panel of World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) estimated that 40% of cancers can be prevented by simple changes in nutrition and physical activity. More strikingly, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study that estimated a 60% reduction in cancer mortality over the course of a study among people who had adopted a healthier lifestyle.

The American Cancer Society states that ‘as many as one-third of cancer deaths in the United States can be prevented if Americans consumed a diet rich in plants and maintained a healthy body weight.’ For patients undergoing active cancer therapy, the American cancer society recommends that the goal of nutritional care for these patients should be to prevent or resolve nutrient deficiencies, achieve or maintain a healthy weight, preserve lean body mass, minimize nutrition-related side effects, and maximize quality of life .

The best method to achieve these goals has yet to be established and the “gold standard” currently involves in-person nutritional counseling. Personalized dietary counseling by a registered dietitian has been shown to provide consistent beneficial effects on energy and protein intake, nutritional status, and quality of life when compared to no standard nutrition advice or ad libitum intake.
